GPCI for Nov 12th, 2005 release at the LCBO
Dear GPCI fans,
I have gathered the Vintages Nov coming release from different sources and decided to share with you the information sooner than usual so you can plan ahead (wines and budget).
There are some great wines in Nov. enjoy and don't forget to share your thoughts with me.
New Zealand
2004 Sherwood estate ‘Stratum’ Sauvignon Blanc $16.95
Winemaker notes - The Sauvignon Blanc displays fresh fragrant aromas of gooseberries and capsicum on the nose. The palate is fresh and lively with a long lingering finish. A wine to be enjoyed over the next two years (12%)
France
2004 W. Gisselbrecht Gewurztraminer ‘Reserve Speciale’ $16.95
All previous Gewurz from this house were great (The 2002 received 88 by WA with a good review). Goes great with Asian and spicy food.
Hungary
1999 Royal Tokaji Aszu 5 Puttonyos ‘Blue Label’ $19.95
This is a great deal to the ones who like this wine (goes great with foie gras)
The Blue Label made from grapes grown on 1st & 2nd Growth Estates and selected growers (as opposed to “Red label” which is from 2nd & 3rd Growth Estates and selected growers). The 1999 vintage is classified as Outstanding - rivaling the 1993 vintage.
Canada
2002 Osoyoos Larose ‘Le Grand Vin’ $35
A British Columbia wine. A right-bank Bordeaux blend - a Merlot dominated (66%) blend with Cab Sauvignon (25%) and Cab Franc (9%). Medium body. Drink 2007-2014.
USA
2001 Rodney Strong Zinfandel ‘Knotty Vines’ $19.95
Great value! Full-body. A fresh and bright Zinfandel with ripe, jammy fruit. Raspberry, blackberry and strawberry aromas lead to a combination of wild berry fruit and spiced flavors. Try it with roasted meats or smoked Gouda cheese. Drink now to 2012.
Argentina
2002 Catena Cabernet Sauvignon $19.95
WS-90; Great value! Full body, concentrated cab.
Chile
2004 Montes Cabernet Sauvignon $12.95
WS-87; AMAZING Value !!! I had it in Chile - don’t think twice buy at least 3 bottles
2003 Perez Cruz Syrah Reserva $22.95
I had it few times in the past and it’s fabulous !!! Full body, inky, silky, jam-like, rich, intense.
Drink now to 2010.
France
2000 Chateau Haut Breton Larigaudiere $36.95
Coming from the Margaux side of the family. Only 2628 bottles of 75 cl were produced.
A blend of 70 percent Cabernet Sauvignon, 25 percent Merlot and five percent Petit Verdot. According to the reviews has a good aging potential – I’d try one around 2006-2008 and decide whether he can go to the 2010+ category.
Italy – Veneto
2000 Allegrini ‘ La Grola’- $29.95
WS-87; From the north-east part of Italy. The 1999 version was a good wine. 2000 was a successful vintage in Vento. Expect a medium to full-bodied, intense and elegant red wine.
It’s a bit expensive for a WS 87…
2001 Tommasi Amarone Della Valpolicella Classico $49.95
Everywine.co.uk says: “Aged four years in Slovenian oak, the palate is exceptional intense with chocolate, coffee background and superbly balanced with power and smoothness.”
Tommasi Amarone can usually age pretty well – I would say drink now to 2010. It’s not a cheap price, but you have to try a Tommasi at least once.
Spain
1995 Condesa De Leganza reserve $13.95
No doubt this is the wine that gets the GPCI best recommendation for this release.
It’s a powerful red (tempranillo grape), from a great vintage, with a relatively very low price that can be drank now until 2007 – NO BRAINER !!!
