GPCi for Sep 12th 2009 release at the LCBO
Argentina
2008 FINCA SOPHENIA RESERVE MALBEC - $17.95
GPCi - I had it before... a very good Malbec for a very reliable producer and for affordable price. What's not to like?
2006 BENMARCO MALBEC - $19.95 (MUST TRY!)
RP=91+ until 2020
GPCi - excellent review by Dr. J for a Malbec that can be cellared for the next 10 years - no brainer. Stock 'em up.
Chile
2006 CREMASCHI FURLOTTI FAMILY LIMITED EDITION - $17.95
Cab-Sauv (60%), Carmenere (20%) and Syrah (20%)
GPCi - I like the blend and th interesting ratio between the varieties. Definitely worth a try of one bottle and then to decide whether to purchase more.
Australia (McLaren Vale)
2006 KANGARILLA ROAD SHIRAZ/VIOGNIER - $27.93
JM=93 ; until 2021
GPCi - I always look for the Northern Rhone typical blend that is made in McLaren Vale for couple of reasons - they know how to make it and it costs a fraction of the cost when the same quality of wine is produce in France.
Australia (Barossa Valley)
2007 TWO HANDS LUCKY COUNTRY SHIRAZ - $18.95
GPCi - A safe bet Shiraz from one of the "Barossa Kings" (Two Hands). If you're planning a BBQ and would like your guests to enjoy a good Shiraz without spending too much money, this is definitely a Shiraz to consider.
France (Bordeaux)
2005 CHÂTEAU BARDE-HAUT - $69.00
RP=93 ; 2011-2023
GPCi - out of the few expensive Bordeaux from this release, I chose this one. I liked the review, I liked the fact that it can be cellared for the next 14 years (although not an amazing GPCi index ~ 4.9). If you want to buy a very good 2005 Bordeaux for your cellar without the need for additional loan from the bank, although it's not cheap, it's a nice addition to your collection for a relatively ok price (relatively to the very expensive 2005 vintage).
France (Midi)
2004 CHÂTEAU PECH-REDON L’ÉPERVIER - $19.95 (MUST TRY)
RP=90 ; equal parts Grenache and Syrah with 20% Carignan
GPCi - Midi is known for its QPR wines. This wine is a good example for the Midi terroir. Good review and very affordable price.
France (Rhone South)
2007 DOMAINE LAFOND ROC-EPINE LIRAC - $19.95 (MUST TRY!)
RP=90-92 ;
GPCi - here we go "2007 South of Rhone valley" again. I have no doubt that this wine is nothing but pure pleasure when it comes to full-complex flavors that many of the 2007 wines from this region provides. I would buy 3-12 bottles.
Germany (RHEINGAU)
2003 SCHLOSS REINHARTSHAUSEN RIESLING SPÄTLESE TROCKEN - $23.95
GPCi - Not an amazing vintage (RP gave it 89 and indicated that it's irregular even amongst the best wines). The SPÄTLESE TROCKEN gives me some indication re the high quality I should expect in this Riesling. I would buy one and decide whether it's worth buying more for the cellar.
Spain
GPCi - A few very good choices from one of my favorites regions. If I need to pick only one of the three, I would go with the 2001 VALLOBERA RESERVA - it's the best QPR between the three.
Spain (Ribera del Duero)
2004 TORREDEROS TINTO CRIANZA - $24.95
JM=91 ; until 2020
Spain (Empordà)
2005 MAS ESTELA QUINDALS - $19.95
JM=90+ ; until 2020
GPCi - this is one of the smallest classified DO wine regions in Spain - runs along Spain's northeastern shore.
Spain (Rioja)
2001 VALLOBERA RESERVA - $28.95 (MUST TRY!!!)
JM=92+ ; until 2030
